Promoting Physiological Sciences Across the Heartland

Our mission at the Heartland Physiological Society is to promote the many disciplines of physiology and biomedical sciences.   The mission is accomplished by HPS members dedicated to research and scholarly activity, education, community service and outreach.  HPS members perform these functions at various universities and colleges, high schools, medical and research facilities, throughout the Heartland region of Oklahoma, north Texas, Arkansas, and Kansas.

About HPS

The Heartland Physiological Society (HPS) is a 501c3 non-profit regional scientific society of scientists, teachers, and students from Oklahoma, Arkansas, north Texas, and Kansas. HPS members represent a diverse group of people conducting cutting-edge scientific research and educating students in all areas of the physiological sciences. HPS is a chapter of the American Physiological Society.

Research – Advancing Knowledge in Multiple Areas of Interest

From studies on DNA, RNA, and other subcellular components to studies on the whole body, HPS researchers conduct scientific investigations related to the nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems improving our understanding of how the human body functions. HPS researchers provide major contributions to treating and curing the most complicated diseases like cancer, blindness, pandemics, and dementia to the common every-day conditions like colds, fevers, and back aches. Genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics are among the many specific areas of expertise of HPS researchers. New technologies related to artificial intelligence will have enormous impact on physiological research, and HPS researchers will be at the forefront of many new and exciting discoveries.

Education – Producing the Next Generation of Scientists and Teachers

HPS members provide excellent education at all levels by teaching and training students in the classroom and laboratory. Using traditional methods as well as new and innovative teaching technologies, HPS educators are performing a vital role in producing future scientists, teachers, and health-care professionals with critical thinking skills required to succeed. High school students preparing to enter undergraduate science programs, undergraduate students preparing for medical, masters, and doctoral programs, and postdoctoral students preparing for faculty positions or industry jobs in the private sector benefit by participating in HPS activities. The HPS annual meeting offers all students the opportunity to present their research and compete for various awards.

Dedicated Leadership and Strong Work Ethics

Our dedicated team brings a wealth of experience and professional qualifications to the table. Led by our competent President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer, we ensure that our goals are met through diligent planning, organization, and implementation. Our leadership is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in all our activities.

Keynote Speakers

We are devoted to empowering students interested in physiological sciences. Our student section includes opportunities for mentorship, scholarships, and hands-on learning experiences. Our keynote speakers share groundbreaking insights, and innovative research, and inspire attendees with their leadership and expertise. Their contributions serve as a foundation for advancing scholarship and encouraging collaboration across disciplines.

Empowering Students Through Engagement

Students have opportunities to engage with each other as well as with distinguished mentors and leaders in their scientific endeavors.  Annual meetings allow for students to present their accomplishments via oral and/or poster presentations a friendly, non-stressful environment.  Students from high schools, undergraduate colleges, graduate programs, and medical schools often compete for awards at the annual meetings.  We are committed to supporting students as they explore the vast possibilities of pursuing exciting careers in the physiological/biomedical sciences.

Celebrating Scholarly Posters and Research

Our society showcases outstanding poster presentations that highlight the hard work, creativity, and dedication of our members. These posters feature groundbreaking research and scholarly achievements, offering an opportunity to exchange ideas, gain valuable feedback, and inspire further innovation in physiology.
